What is the BigYear?
The BIG year is a year of growth - encountering God, growing in calling, character and leadership. Based at Revelation Church in Chichester and overseen by Roger Ellis from Revelation and Allan Cox from New Community. We believe that personal growth and development needs to encompass three main areas and the programme as a whole, seeks to reflect all of these.
 |
Character: At the root of this is discovering who you are, who God has made you to be, and finding security in that. We address important issues of heart attitudes through teaching, spiritual encounters and personal mentoring.
Understanding: We encourage all participants to push beyond knowledge into a deeper understanding of scripture and theology. This is not dry academic learning but dynamic exploration with gifted teachers.
Spiritual Authority: We want to see followers of Jesus fully equipped to experience the power of the Holy Spirit, breaking into their everyday lives, helping them to minister to those around them. Significant time is taken in exploring this area both in teaching and practical experience. |
How is the BigYear Structured?
The programme runs from September to July. The key building blocks are:
- Monday all day/Tuesday am teaching, worship and personal ministry
- Monthly Thursday evening meal and interview with a variety of ministry leaders from inside and outside of Revelation Church, New Community Church and Arun Community Church.
- Monthly prayer and training session with Church Leaders from across the southern region.
These are interwoven with service and ministry opportunities, study projects, reading weeks and special courses and conferences.
Option 1
A full-time, intern style opportunity that includes all teaching sessions, courses, projects and basic ministry opportunities plus further mentoring, ministry-shadowing (with options to choose particular involvement in leadership experience.)
|
Option 2
A flexible programme that can include all teaching sessions, courses, projects and basic ministry opportunities, but also leaves time in the week for part time employment.

|
An important feature of the The BigYear is the opportunity to interact with and influence each other. It is flexible, affordable and can be engaged both full time or part time as a year out, a mid career sabbatical year, a retirement adventure or, with some help, whilst the kids are at school!
Other Elements of The BigYear
Core Curriculum There is a developed course of study covering doctrine, mission, the life of a disciple and the supernatural. For more details click here...
Monthly Leaders Prayer and Training There will be a monthly prayer and training session with Church Leaders from across the southern region. Training around personal development.
Growing in the Supernatural This will focus on hearing God, encountering the Holy Spirit, growing in the gifts of the spirit and stepping out in the prophetic and healing gifts.
Cantle Training We have the privilege of offering a weekend, exclusive to our Big Year delegates, where they can experience Cantle Leadership training for themselves as developed by our friend, Jim McNeish (http://www.cantle.net)
Kairos Missions Course Using a variety of formats, this imparts God's heart for the world through an intensive 5 days and looks at the Biblical, Historical, Strategic and Cultural aspects of World Mission. Most people who complete this course say that it has an incredible impact on their lives (http://www.kairoscourse.org.uk)
Conferences and Events
Pioneer, Revelation, New Community and Arun regularly host conferences and events of various types, with noted international speakers. Big Year participants have free access to these, with opportunities for service and participation in prayer ministry.
Overseas & Local Mission Trips
In term 3 there are mission trips for every student to participate in. There will probably be at least 2 options - a European destination and one further afield. Please note that the costs of all overseas and UK travel are NOT included in the course fees.
TheBigYear programme for 2011/2012 The training takes place on a Monday (9am to 5pm) and Tuesday (9am to 12.30pm) each week and runs over three terms of 12 weeks plus a Reading Week in the middle. There will also be a “revival visit” one Saturday each term, which is a visit to a location that has experienced a “move of the God” (e.g. Moriah Chapel and the Welsh Revival).
The dates are as follows:
Term 1: 19 September 2011 to 12 December 2011 inclusive Reading Week – 31 October 2011-03-02 Term 2: 9 January 2012 to 2 April 2012 inclusive Reading Week – 20 February 2012 Term 3: 16 April 2012 to 23 July 2012 inclusive Reading Week – 4 or 11 June 2012
Course Fees – the cost of the course is £1,300 for the whole year but if are only able to take part in one day of the teaching programme we will reduce this to £1,000 - we can discuss this option with you on application. A deposit of £60 is required on application to cover administration costs, which will be refunded if you are not successful in obtaining a place. Fees can either be paid up front each term or by equal monthly instalments.
Travel - the fees do not include the costs of overseas travel (probably around £800) and UK travel (e.g. Revival Trips probably around £20 each per trip). We have the unique opportunity of being involved in outreach during the Olympic Games at the end of July 2012 but costs for this are currently unknown.
Mentoring – each student is put into a mentor group led by those involved in local church leadership. Where possible, each group will have mix of ages, gender and experience and will meet once each week. Each student will be assigned a mentor who they will meet with at least once each half term. The purpose of mentoring is to strengthen the group learning experience and personal development.
Assignments and Presentations – each term there will be a piece of written work and a presentation set for students and the aim is to foster the growth of each individual rather than assess written or presentation skills.
Reading Weeks – these coincide with half term and allow an opportunity to read the recommended books. For each book, students will be required to write a short review, which is discussed in the mentor group and handed to the mentor group leader.
An Audience with… each month a Thursday evening will be set aside to hear the life story of a guest and learn from them what it means to follow Jesus through the good and hard times.
Location of Training – we plan to run the training at The Revelation Church Chichester with the administration being handled by the team in Chichester.
