Church Life

Deeper & Wider

Our vision for 2011 is to go ‘Deeper & Wider’. It’s all about going ‘Deeper’ into the Bible and ‘Wider’ into our community. Everything that we do this year will look to create space for this.
Deeper
2011 sees the 400th anniversary of the translation of the Authorised Version of the Bible commissioned by King James I and his parliament. This was a hugely significant moment that saw the Bible translated into English and agreed by teams of scholars from different streams and into the hands of everyday people from the religious elite. One of the teams (the first
Westminster company) was lead by Lancelot Andrewes who went on to become the Bishop of Chichester in 1605.

We want this to be an opportunity to encourage people to engage and fall in love with the Word of God. In England we are still in the very fortunate position of having free access to the uncensored Bible yet in most houses they just gather dust. We can also turn too quickly to the latest podcasts and worship music to hear God’s voice and not the Word of God. Some estimate that there are over 3000 promises of Father God for his people in the Bible for
us to revel in.

So the challenge we want to set out in 2011 is to get stuck into the Bible in a new way. Appreciating we are all very different people of different ages that connect in different ways we have created a list of different resources to create some space to “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly”.

Going Deeper Nights
We have also booked in 5 mid week evenings through out 2011 to create some space to go deeper. We have asked some national leaders to come and share with us.

Wider
There is no point in growing deeper if we don’t turn this outwards into our community. If you dig a deep hole that is not wide enough it can cave in. As a church we feel passionately about the place we live in and the church playing an active role within the local community. We want to be a shining light in Chichester. We also want to create space for people to come and explore faith from a no faith background.

Through the year we will run a number of events both on a larger and smallerscale to create opportunity for people to bring friends and family to. These events also profile a number of projects and charities that we are connected with at Revs.

Our next wider focus is the Mr & Mrs Quiz Night at the Venue on Friday 11th February 2011. Tickets including meals are £20 (per couple) and available from the Revs Office (emily@revelation.org.uk).
