Sinking Timber

The last week has saw some bizarre images from our local beaches here in West Sussex. It stemmed from the sinking of the cargo ship the Ice Princess about 26 miles off the south coast. The Ice Princess was swamped in heavy storms whilst carrying a large cargo of timber that ended up strewn across miles of beaches. The storm with its gale force winds that fatally damaged the ship saw swells over 5 meter. The stricken Ice Princess sank the following days when similar heavy seas struck.
It resulted in nearly 3,000 tonnes of sawn timber being washed up on our beaches. Many of the worst effected beaches were closed whilst the work to recover the cargo continued. All 12 crew members were rescued by the RNLI and coast guard.

I was over in Brighton earlier this week (a week on from the sinking) and the beech was still closed with tonnes of timber still strewn as far as I could see in both directions. It reminded me of a story in the Bible of a boat that was struggling in a violent storm. Jesus was on the boat sleeping through the storm when some of his friends woke him in absolute fear for their lives. What happened next was a major turning point for the disciples as Jesus ordered the storm to cease and it obeyed him. It totally freaked them out more than the storm itself as it dawned on them that their friend backed up his claims with some actions to prove his claims.

If you find yourself in a storm I would strongly encourage you to go and ask Jesus for his help and see what happens.
